Meet Dr. Borgwardt

Dr. BorgwardtDr. Derek Borgwardt was raised in Clinton, Iowa, and has lived in Iowa City since 2001. Prior to entering private practice, he attended the University of Iowa, College of Dentistry, where he received his DDS in 2008, followed by his specialty certificate in periodontics and a master’s degree in oral science.  He currently also serves as a visiting, adjunct faculty in the graduate clinics, Department of Periodontics, at the University of Iowa, and has been a guest lecturer for multiple dental groups and organizations.  His practice covers the entire scope of periodontal therapy including: the treatment of gum disease, bone and gum grafting, dental implant surgery, laser therapy,  cosmetic periodontal plastic procedures, and IV sedation.

Dr. Borgwardt is a board-certified periodontist and member of multiple local and national professional organizations including the American Dental Association, the American Academy of Periodontology, the Midwest Society of Periodontology, the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology.  He is a past president of the Johnson County Dental Society, the University District of the Iowa Dental Association, and the Iowa Society of Periodontology.  Dr. Borgwardt has been recognized for both his clinical and research achievements, being the recipient of the Max Smith award for dental research, the C. Mahlon Fraleigh award for scholastic and clinical excellence, as well as being inducted into the prestigious International College of Dentists.

Dr. Borgwardt spends most of his free time with his wife (Stacy) and daughters (Sidney and Brynn).  Additional time is spent cheering for the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs, and New Orleans Saints.  He also enjoys travel, fitness, outdoor activity, fishing, and reading.
